Jane Austen 250th Birthday Celebration at Case Memorial Library
On Saturday, November 15th at 1:00 p.m., please join the Friends of Case Memorial Library as they commemorate Jane Austen’s 250 birthday. The Friends will offer an array of assorted refreshments to enjoy with tea. Of course, tea is always best when it is served in one’s own favorite cup; therefore, patrons are asked to bring along their teacup of choice in which to savor a delectable brew.
Following the tea, patrons are invited to stay in order to enjoy a presentation about the Regency era, the fascinating time in which Austen lived and which enlivened her imagination. The presenter Christina Volpe is well versed in this time period. Volpe is Curator and Site Administrator of the Barnes Museum located in Southington, CT. For her talk, Volpe will have on hand artifacts from the Barnes Museum collection that will help illustrate Austen’s world. These are the objects that defined Austen’s life and times.
Volpe also wears a period costume to further enhance her discussion. Moreover, in order to give her audience perspective, Volpe will give a glimpse into what life looked like in America during the same period. Austen completed only six novels during her brief lifetime; she never married, and she died at the relatively young age of 41. Yet, this novelist has captured the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world for the past 250 years.

This program is the first of several events being offered by the Library that lead up to Austen’s birthday anniversary on December 16.
